Detailed Steps
The steps listed below can be completed in any order. If you are working with a more experienced user, they can (and should) help you with completing these steps and in particular the descriptions of the process that you intend to do in the LNF (step 2). If, for any reason, you are not able to complete any of the steps in a timely fashion or have questions about them, please let us know. If you have a specific timeline for starting to work in the LNF, please let us know.
Effective 11/01/2020, the LNF has resumed intake of new onsite lab users, which had been on hold since March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
- Contact LNF staff to discuss your research project and processing needs.
- Write a 1 page description of your research project and a 1 page description of your process steps. This information is needed to determine whether the LNF has the capabilities that you need and to ensure that materials that you will be using are compatible with other research being conducted in the LNF. Please send these two documents to info@LNF.umich.edu
- Attend info session on LNF access. These are currently held virtually. Please sign up here. This session will provide information about LNF access, training policies, and the LNF Online Services system.
- Complete the LNF Access Form. Page 1 and the top box of page 2 have to be completed. Your mentor should be a currently active, experienced LNF user who is familiar with your process. Please see here for an overview of the mentor’s responsibility. If you are the first LNF user in your group or do not have a mentor available, a staff member will be assigned to your project as a mentor. The form should be signed by your advisor or supervisor. See here for the fee structure. Please scan/email the completed form to LNF-access@umich.edu, fax to 734-647-1781 or drop off at 1239 EECS or 1246D EECS.
- Complete the following new user training modules:
- General Lab Safety Training: These two (2) modules are administered by EHS. Please go to the U-M MyLinc site, register for and complete EHS_BLS025w and EHS_OHS_COVIDw. Once you are done, please obtain your certificate(s) online at MyLinc and send them to LNF-access@umich.edu. If you have taken one of these EHS courses within the last two years, you may opt out of taking the quiz by contacting LNF staff and showing them your certificate(s) of completion. Note that, if you need to use the LNF BSL-2 space, additional training will be required.
- LNF User Training Manual: Read Part I: General Information and Part II: Emergency Procedures, and take this open book quiz.
- HF Safety Training: Hydrofluoric acid is commonly used in the LNF, and poses particular hazards which everyone working in the LNF should know about. Read this information about HF safety and take this open book quiz.
- COVID Protocols: Read the http://lnf-wiki.eecs.umich.edu/wiki/COVID-19_Protocols and take the corresponding quiz. When prompted for your LNF username, please use your UMich uniqname.
- Read and sign the LNF User Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). Discuss with your advisor/PI as needed before signing the document.
- View “Experimenting with Danger” video.
- Schedule a 30 minute interview with LNF staff [lnf-access@umich.edu] once all steps above are complete. Your mentor should also attend this meeting. We will review your safety training records, process and training needs and you will be issued your LNF access card and username/password for the LNF Online Services.
